Volunteer
Work - Our Philosophy:
We
have come to see volunteer work as an exchange between the student and
community, which takes place on many levels. The value of their participation
in the community corresponds to the amount that both sides learn from
each other, rather than to the actual work done. It consists of many
experiences and insights, and depends on the people and the activity
involved.Students participating in volunteer work will stay with a family
in the cooperative, where they receive board and meals. The cost of
US$ 30 per week will be divided between the family and the project.
We require that students wishing to participate as volunteers spend
between one and six weeks at Ulew Tinimit prior to commencing the project.
The length of time spent at the school will depend on your command of
the Spanish language. At Ulew Tinimit you will receive written, verbal,
and visual information about your "servicio voluntario", in order to
better understand the work plan and content of the project.
Since
a high level of Spanish is required to successfully partake in long-term
projects, i.e. Rural Education, these are not open to students with
a beginner's level of Spanish. Approximately six weeks of Spanish study
seem to be the minimum for a beginner to achieve the necessary level.
Once participating in the projects, students appreciate the reason for
this language requirement
