Quetzaltenango, also known by its K´iche name "Xela" [shay-la], is located in the western highlands of Guatemala. It is set in a beautiful valley, surrounded by ancient volcanoes and high mountains.
The population is approx. 125,000. Unlike the capital city, Xela has a distinct Mayan character. It is located at an altitude of approximately 2330 m (8,000 feet). Xela is a safe, "tranquila", non-tourist city that offers the perfect learning environment.
Part of the reason why Xela is the perfect learning place is that, compared to other tourist Centers, you won't find many people who speak English and the costs of schools and living are lower.
Another reason is that the Guatemalans are generally recognized as having one of the clearest Spanish accents and they don't speak as rapidly as some of their neighbors.
